a note on cloning

What interests me about the popular portrayal of cloning in science fiction is how removed it is from the actual details of cloning.

The process of cloning, as scientifically performed, is with the goal of having an animal with identical genetic material to another. In Science Fiction, however, clones are general expected to be far more identical.

The closest actually-existing things I can think of to Science Fiction–esque clones are identical twins. They’re nearly genetically identical, but they also are the same age, something scientific twins are not. Assuming I’m understanding the science correctly, and it’s quite possible I’m not.

But that’s a lot less exciting to think about, isn’t it? 😉
